A Week in the Life of Tough Tools
Tough Tools is a manufacturer of steel tools. It has offices in many countries, including Japan. The Japanese office is located in Roppongi, Tokyo. It employs a total of 80 people.
Tough Tools does a lot of international business, so all office communications are in English.
This text follows the story of Tom Tanaka and his colleagues. Tom is 26 years old. He is from Los Angeles in the United States. He worked for Tough Tools in Los Angeles but has just been transferred to Japan. He is going to work in the Sales Department. This week is his first week with Tough Tools in Japan.
Let’s meet some of Tom’s new colleagues.
Jim Black
Department Head
He is English. He has lived in Japan for over 10 years and has a Japanese wife.
In his free time he enjoys fishing, riding his Ducati motorcycle and painting.
Ken Shima
Senior Salesman
He is Japanese, but he has lived abroad a lot.
Ken enjoys travelling, playing rock guitar and doing outdoor sports.
Chris North
Office Manager
Chris is English. She majored in Japanese at university.
She likes watching action movies, karaoke, and has a black belt in karate.
Larry Wilde
Sales Assistant
Larry is from Australia. He came to Japan as an English teacher before joining Tough Tools. He joined the company only two weeks ago.
He loves animals, music and is a vegetarian.
TUESDAY
Tom spent yesterday organising his new life in Japan. Today is the first day for Tom to go to his new office. He will meet his boss and other staff members. He will have the chance to introduce himself and get to know his office and job a little better.
